Platform Theatre Workshop

Description

Platform Theatre is one of the most innovative and unique forms of theatre worldwide. This style elevates physical theatre by transforming actors into not just characters, but also the set, props, costumes, and every element in between—all within the confines of a small space, in our case, a gym mat.

Platform Theatre benefits students and the curriculum from its accessibility alone. This style allows students of any economic background to achieve a high-quality, professional standard piece without spending a penny.

Increasing GCSE drama uptake and empowering a no-budget approach to creating theatre, we strive to introduce new and innovative ways of allowing students to express, create and put their own theatre aspirations into practice without the need of concern for budget or resources.

This workshop will be led by the award-winning platform theatre actors and directors of the UK touring production Twisted Tales, which has earned a total of 12 awards, including Best Original Piece, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Ensemble, and Best Director.

In this workshop, your students will be introduced to the fundamentals of platform theatre and given the chance to devise their own piece, combining physical theatre, mime, and voice to create something entirely original. The students will also discover how platform theatre offers a highly accessible and cost-effective way to stage performances, using only the actors' bodies and voices to represent props, sets, costumes, and sound effects.

This approach not only nurtures creativity but also ensures that theatre can be produced with minimal resources, making it an ideal solution for schools and aspiring performers alike.

Curriculum

Students will delve into the distinct elements of platform theatre and discover what makes this style so captivating. They’ll gain practical insights into how platform theatre builds discipline and maximizes limited performance space, enhancing spatial awareness between actors and the audience.

In this workshop, students will explore foundational physical theatre techniques, learning to portray a character’s unique physicality—from facial expressions to body build, height, and age. This hands-on experience equips them to bring any character to life with authenticity and presence, all within the dynamic framework of platform theatre.
